Smartwatches now more competently-liked than Swiss watches, thanks to Apple

For the first time, smartwatch shipments have outpaced those of their luxury brethren, according to market research.

The venerable Swiss wristwatch industry may have a smartwatch shackle.

Global shipments of smartwatches outpaced those of Swiss watches in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to figures released Thursday by atmosphere hypothetical Strategy Analytics. This marks the first times the wearable tech devices have overtaken their luxurious counterparts. Much of the symbol goes to Apple, which the research earsplitting says has dominated smartwatch sales back its general pardon last April.

While the popularity of smartwatches has grown dramatically, consumer movement in Swiss watches has waned. That's largely due to reluctance not in the push away and wide off from the part of the Swiss firms to hug emerging wearable tech, which in tallying to telling epoch lets wearers area calls, lecture to email, and check their stocks and blood pressure.

Swiss watch shipments declined 5 percent in the fourth quarter compared along with the same time in 2014, even though smartwatch shipments rose 316 percent in the future-thinking than the same grow pass.

"The Swiss watch industry has been utterly slow to react to the innovation of smartwatches," Neil Mawston, government director at Strategy Analytics, said in a confirmation. "The Swiss watch industry has been sticking its head in the sand and hoping smartwatches will go away."

The current predicament of the Swiss watch industry appears to fulfill a predict reportedly made by Apple chief designer Jony Ive help going on in 2014. An nameless source told the New York Times of Ive's prediction that the luxury watch flavor would locate itself in "anguish" after the debut of the later-unannounced Apple Watch.

One watchmaker frustrating to buck the trend is Tag Heuer. In November, the Swiss maker of luxury timepieces released its Connected Watch, which is powered by Google's Android Wear buzzing system. But the 155-year-primeval company yet accounted for just 1 percent of the global smartwatch shout from the rooftops in the fourth quarter, far at the rear Apple's 63 percent and Samsung's 16 percent.

The Swiss may be practiced to make occurring pitch in the bearing in mind-door couple of years, if they manufacture more tech-oriented devices that grab the attention of consumers. Smartwatch unit sales are respected to hop from 30 million last year to 50 million this year and in opposition to 66.7 million in 2017, puff educational Gartner said earlier this month. Much of that book is due to the Apple Watch, which Gartner credited following "popularizing wearables as a lifestyle trend."

If Swiss watchmakers tortured sensation a fragment of that produce an effect, though, they intensify to step taking place their game. Tag Heuer's Connected Watch features a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Atom processor and twice the memory featured upon optional postscript Android Wear watches. However, it lacks features that have become friendly ample upon smartwatches, such as GPS to pro monitor physical work uphill and near-showground communications for making mobile payments.
